Methane is responsible for approximately one-third of current global warming and represents one of the fastest routes to slow near-term climate change. Landfills present some of the largest and most cost-effective mitigation opportunities through proven solutions such as landfill gas capture, flaring, and energy recovery.
Following the approval of the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism (PACM) landfill gas methodology (A6.4-AMM-001), robust asset-level emissions data are increasingly important for identifying priority sites, assessing mitigation potential, developing bankable projects, and monitoring implementation. Climate TRACE provides global emissions data for more than 13,600 landfills and is collaborating with the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre Article 6 Pipeline to support project development under Article 6.
