As countries prepare for COP31 in 2026, the ocean is gaining increasing prominence on the global climate agenda. Healthy and resilient oceans are fundamental to life on Earth, sustaining biodiversity, supporting food security and livelihoods, underpinning cultural values and human well-being, and contributing to economic development for communities around the world. At the same time, the ocean plays a critical role in regulating the Earth’s climate system, absorbing roughly 30% of global carbon dioxide emissions and taking up more than 90% of the additional heat trapped by climate change. These ecological, social, and climate functions are deeply interconnected.
The 2026 Climate Technology Progress Report – Navigating Ocean-based Technologies focusses on three interrelated ocean-based climate technologies: ocean observation and digital capabilities, Blue Carbon Ecosystem management, and marine carbon dioxide removal techniques. Together, these approaches have the potential to strengthen ocean carbon uptake, maintain long-term carbon storage, improve climate resilience and enhance adaptive capacity.
They can support both mitigation and adaptation objectives while contributing to healthier oceans and more resilient coastal communities.
Join us for this webinar, where we will present the findings of the 2026 Climate Technology Progress Report.
Drawing on insights from the Progress Report and the expertise of Climate Technology Progress Report lead authors, UNFCCC TEC, and CTCN advisory board members the webinar will highlight the global perspective on progress in the development and transfer of ocean-based climate technologies while provide a SIDS regional assessment for these technologies.
The report is intended as a resource for policymakers, practitioners, and stakeholders seeking to advance integrated, effective, and equitable climate and nature action in the lead-up to COP 31 and beyond.
