MA&DM seeks to recruit a Research Assistant to contribute to mitigation analysis and climate transparency. The Research Assistant will join a team of 12 colleagues for a temporary position of up to 2 years to start as soon as possible after the successful candidate has been identified and ideally by mid-March. The successful candidate will primarily support the production of the UNEP Emissions Gap Reports and contribute to our work on climate transparency. This involves identification and analysis of greenhouse gases (GHG) mitigation potential and mitigation actions, development of approaches and methodologies for the establishment and implementation of national and sectoral transparency systems and development of tools and reports in the context of climate change mitigation and NDCs.

Key tasks and responsibilities
- UNEP Emissions Gap Reports – the primary task of the new team member will be to support the production of the annual UNEP Emissions Gap Report, which is UN Environment’s flagship report on climate change mitigation. This will account for at least 50 percent of the research assistant’s time. Key tasks and responsibilities include: organise conference calls and meetings, prepare contracts and payments, organise external reviews and collate review comments, support chapter development, prepare introductory parts of the report, support production process including being the focal point for the design and layout of the report, and support the outreach of the report, including the global launch and side events during the UNFCCC COP meetings.
- Mitigation analysis and climate transparency – the research assistant will furthermore contribute to our work on mitigation analysis and climate transparency under different projects focusing on the transparency mechanism of the UNFCCC and the development/update of national NDCs in developing countries. Tasks will include support to analysis, data collection and processing, publications and organisation of meetings.
Qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated team player with knowledge and understanding of climate change mitigation and transparency. The successful candidates should have a degree in economics, science, environmental science or other relevant discipline at M.Sc. or equivalent level. Skills required for the work on the UNEP assessment reports include excellent writing and organisational skills, attention to detail, and good knowledge of the topic areas of the report in question. The candidates should demonstrate sound analytical skills. Experience in preparing technical and/or policy-relevant reports and papers are an asset.
Overall selection criteria are:
- Good knowledge of global and national mitigation priorities;
- Good knowledge of the energy sector and/or other relevant sector in the context of climate change;
- Experience in the use of mitigation assessment tools;
- Understanding of the Paris Agreement, in particular of the NDCs and Enhanced Transparency Framework;
- Strong analytical skills, an innovative mindset, and the ability to adapt to different tasks and workloads quickly and effectively;
- Demonstrated excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills in English; proficiency in other languages, in particular Spanish and/or French is an asset;
- Ability to work effectively both individually as well as in teams, with people from different academic and cultural backgrounds;
- Experience in preparing technical and/or policy-relevant reports and papers is considered a strong asset;
- Experience in working with developing countries is an asset.
Terms of employment
UDP is part of the Department of Management Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark and employees are university staff – not UN staff. The successful candidate will be employed in a full-time position according to the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
The position is a temporary position of up to 2 years. Starting date: mid-March 2021. The place of work is the UN City based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
