Jiajing Zhao is a Carbon Market Specialist providing science-based advice on GHG and SDG assessments, transformational impact assessments, carbon market governance, transparency in NDC implementation, and ITMO accounting and reporting under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. He leads the development of the Article 6 Pipeline, a web-based platform providing open data and analysis of Article 6 implementation globally.
Before joining UNEP-CCC, he spent over 18 years working in the global carbon market, particularly contributing to its governance and regulatory advancement. Since 2010, he has worked with the UNFCCC Secretariat in support of the regulatory bodies of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism (PACM). He managed certification cycles for over 1,000 GHG mitigation projects and supported NDC assessments for the NDC Synthesis Report. He serves on the roster of experts for CDM and PACM in the areas of methodology development, project assessment, accreditation of validation and verification bodies, and climate policy.
Since 2022, he has also advised the governance bodies of independent carbon crediting programmes worldwide, including the Global Carbon Council, Verra, and ICVCM. In parallel, he has expanded his work to include Paris Agreement alignment assessments for multilateral development banks and the evaluation of environmental and social impacts of financial instruments, including funds investing in Green, Social, Sustainability, and Sustainability-Linked (GSSS) bond markets.
He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Tsinghua University in the area of green buildings and thermal engineering.
