Morocco is among the most vulnerable countries to climate change impacts. Its agricultural sector, its economy and its population are exposed to increasingly severe hazards. At the same time, the agriculture sector is a sizeable source of GHG emissions.
Responding to the need for climate change mitigation and adaptation will require mainstreaming climate change considerations into the work of the country’s preeminent provider of support to farmers, the Moroccan Agriculture Development Agency.
Funded by the NDC Partnership’s Action Fund, UNEP will support the Moroccan Agriculture Development Agency building capacity in climate finance and assisting in resource mobilization for climate mitigation and adaptation.
The primary objective is to strengthen ADA’s capacity to access a wider range of climate finance, including funding from the Green Climate Fund, the Adaptation Fund, from multilateral development banks and other climate funds. Moreover, UNEP seeks to support the Agency in conceptualizing a proposal to access Loss & Damage funding.
Overall, this project pursues three goals:
- Produce bankable project proposals developed in alignment with climate funds’ requirements to mobilize resources for ADA
- Ensure the resilience of the Moroccan agriculture sector by building a pipeline of adaptation and mitigation projects
- Strengthened staff capacities through technical sessions on climate finance
This work is funded by the NDC Partnership Action Fund, a funding mechanism for countries to have greater access to technical and financial resources to respond to climate action needs.
Since 2023, UNEP and the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre have supported developing countries in fast-tracking their NDC implementation and bridging gaps in support with funding from the NDC Partnership Action Fund.
