Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) is an essential element of the global architecture to achieve the climate goals established in the Paris Agreement. Every five years, countries use the NDC as their primary tool to communicate, nationally as well as internationally, its plans and commitments for climate action, both in terms of reducing emissions and in terms of responding to climate risks through adaptation actions and measures to address loss and damage. NDCs are thus complicated documents caught in the crossfire between policy, science, finance and necessity.
Mauritius submitted its third NDC in September 2025, consistent with national and internationally set deadlines. However, it was agreed by key national stakeholders that the NDC 3.0 would require a more robust methodological and procedural approach leading to the submission of fully fledged NDC 3.0 at a later stage. Mauritius therefore sought the support of the NDC Partnership, to engage UNEP-CCC to address the gaps to further improve and support a resubmission of the NDC 3.0.
The work is expected to be completed in Q3 of 2026, with the formal approval and submission of a new NDC for Mauritius.
This work is funded by the NDC Partnership Action Fund, a funding mechanism for countries to have greater access to technical and financial resources to respond to climate action needs.
Since 2023, UNEP and the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre have supported developing countries in fast-tracking their NDC implementation and bridging gaps in support with funding from the NDC Partnership Action Fund.
