This synthesis brief presents evidence and lessons from the 2024–2026 SISET project on advancing socially inclusive renewable energy transitions at the subnational level in Indonesia, with a focus on South Sulawesi.
It examines how renewable energy planning can move beyond deployment targets to deliver local economic development, energy security, jobs, skills, and equitable participation.
Drawing on policy analysis, stakeholder engagement, interviews, workshops, and practical examples, the publication identifies persistent gaps in coordination, planning, financing, institutional capacity, and the integration of energy priorities into regional development and budgeting systems.
It offers actionable recommendations and tools for provincial and national policymakers, development partners, and research institutions to embed renewable energy in productive sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, MSMEs, and industry, while strengthening local governance and implementation capacity.
The SISET project is implemented by the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre and funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark (Danida).
