UNEP DTU Partnership has entered into a new institutional collaboration to boost the impact of energy efficiency in the Mediterranean region.
In a signing ceremony today at the Cop 25 negotiations in Madrid, UNEP DTU Partnership’s Copenhagen Centre on Energy Efficiency and the Union for the Mediterranean formally established a new bilateral cooperation.
The new partnership will pursue regional and international initiatives that can help achieve the common objectives of the two organisations in the fields of energy efficiency policy. Focus will be on implementation at local level in the southern Mediterranean region.
Accelerating energy efficiency
At the ceremony the cooperation was signed by UNEP DTU Partnership Director, John Christensen, and Secretary General of the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean, Nasser Kamel.
The Union of the Mediterranean works to empower regional integration between the Euro-Mediterranean countries, reinforcing South-South and North-South cooperation through an operational and inclusive approach.
As the Energy Efficiency Hub of the Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Initiative, the Copenhagen Centre on Energy Efficiency is dedicated to accelerate the uptake of energy efficiency policies, programmes and actions globally. The Centre’s prime responsibility is to support SEforALL’s objective of doubling the global rate of energy efficiency improvement by 2030.
Creating synergies
The collaboration between the Union for the Mediterranean and the Copenhagen Centre on Energy Efficiency took effect immediately after the signing, and the partners are now drafting a work plan for their common activities.
This will include regular consultations on issues and activities that relates to the organizations’ common objectives and ensuring the greatest possible coordination of activities that can create synergies for energy efficiency implementation in the Mediterranean region.
