INDC Support

Helping countries develop and implement Nationally Determined Contributions

Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are key to saving our climate.

As well as being a crucial part of the global climate negotiations, they are also complicated documents caught in the crossfire between policy, science, finance and necessity.

UNEP DTU Partnership along with UN Environment are providing support to developing countries with development and implementation of NDCs and the previous INDCs (Intended Nationally Determined Contributions).

The actions contained in all NDCs represent the collective global effort, which will determine whether the world will achieve the long-term temperature goal of the Paris Agreement or not. The NDCs are therefore the central element of the Paris Agreement and the main climate change policy framework.

The foundation of the agreement’s architecture is that all Parties will nationally determine what actions they are able and willing to take.

Leading up to the Paris Agreement the INDC Support project phase 1 directly supported 36 countries in submitting their INDCs, that met the UNFCCC Convention reporting obligations and were part of forming the basis for the Paris Agreement.

In phase 2 focus is now on implementation of NDCs through both direct support to countries in enhancing understanding of NDC implementation and institutionalization and dissemination of guidance publications developed by UNPE DTU Partnership as well as training workshops and advisory notes.
